As we start a new academic year, we at MBCG, LLC. on behalf of faculty working in US Colleges and Universities want to take a moment to address an important topic that concerns many parents: FERPA regulations and the communication between professors and parents.
FERPA, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. This means that once a student turns 18, or attends a school beyond the high school level, these rights transfer to the student. As a result, professors, without written or documented consent from your child, are legally unable to discuss a student's academic progress or other related matters.
We understand that as a parent, you are deeply invested in your child's education and well-being, and it can be concerning not to have direct access to information about their academic performance. Please know that while professors may not be able to engage with you about your child's specific academic standing, it does not mean that they are not invested in your child's success.
We encourage you to have open and honest conversations with your child about their academic experiences and challenges. By maintaining a supportive and communicative relationship with them, you can provide the guidance and assistance they may need to navigate their college journey.
If there are extenuating circumstances that you believe could impact your child's academic progress, please feel free to reach out to appropriate university resources, such as counseling services or academic advisors, who can provide support and guidance.
